Relating to the specific spatial features of the Tobacco Gallery, Bernik’s exhibition will investigate intersections between art and everyday life in the artist’s characteristic style as well as address the issue of social space and the ways in which art can enter it. The visual artist from Ljubljana, Viktor Bernik (1971) graduated from painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1998 under the mentorship of Metka Krašovec and Bojan Gorenc. Under Gorenc’s supervision, he also completed his specialization.
Bernik continued his studies in the USA, participated in many high-profile group exhibitions in Slovenia, and held international solo shows. He is the author and initiator of the project Made in China, one of the heads of the artist-run GalerijaGallery in Ljubljana, and the receiver of the Rihard Jakopič Award for 2019. Following Sašo Sedlaček, Mark Požlep, Jaša, Urša Vidic, Miha Štrukelj, Meta Grgurevič, Sanela Jahić, Boris Beja, and Nika Autor, the project is part of solo presentations that younger-generation Slovenian artists prepare especially for the exhibition space of the Tobacco Gallery.
