Late baroque painter Herrlein
The City Museum of Ljubljana is the custodian of a vast collection of portraits, works by Andrej Herrlein (1738–1817).
The painter, who was an important local portraitist of Ljubljana’s middle-class, was one of the most active members of Ljubljana’s shooting society (the collection of which is also kept at the museum) and has never been presented with an independent exhibition, and is also lacking a publication that would present us with his oeuvre.
Alongside portraits, his paintings focus mostly on religious motifs and four cityscapes of Ljubljana. The exhibition will present a selection of his most important works, with a meticulously designed accompanying exhibition catalogue, which shall present the painter through a biography as well as with an art-historical study and a catalogue of his known oeuvre.
The exhibition is an important complement of the museum’s main annual exhibition. Book. Knowledge. Reason., which presents the achievements of the Early modern period in Ljubljana.
