Tina Konec: Lines

Drawings 2015–2017

22. 11. 2017–24. 12. 2017

The overview exhibition of the young artist presents a selection of smaller and larger monochromatic drawings, 123 drawings in ink and pencil, all from the 2015–2017 period. The author sees the drawing as a basis for future works or an independent artwork.

"For me, none of my art is complete without drawing, which is the foundation for my creative expression. The nature I depict is universal and eternally relevant, and I'm fascinated by the repetitive character of natural forms in the micro and macro worlds. I explore this through drawing because the core motif, i.e. treetops, is so thoroughly articulated that the final creation alludes to other similar natural shapes. This sparks a completely subjective interplay between associations, which allows unlimited interpretations and conclusions to be drawn. It always makes me happy when I’m told that any of my drawings are reminiscent of space, the lines on our palms, water currents, clouds, even hair, mists, fractals, other natural phenomena, and the like. In addition to nature, another aspect I like to delve into is the relationship between the positive and the negative and between fullness and emptiness, which comes particularly to the fore in my drawings entitled Day and Night. I strive to achieve maximum impact through simple means of expression. Although the ink/pencil on paper technique may appear simple, basic and rather traditional, it still holds significant potential for innovation. My work process is also important because the time I devote to creating the drawings is a form of meditation and completely for myself." Tina Konec

Tina Konec was born in Maribor in 1992. In 2015 she graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design of the University of Ljubljana under the tutelage of Prof Zmago Lenárdič, before continuing her post-graduate studies under the mentorship of Tugo Šušnik. Konec creats the illustrations (Celjski Novi Tednik, 2014) and has run a series of children's workshops (International Centre of Graphic Arts 2016). She lives in Ljubljana and Oplotnica.

Gazing into the crowns of the trees,
the sky, the light and the whiteness

Up and only up to the sky – all of Tina Konec’s drawings lead our gaze upwards. The role played by her depictions of tree tops is just as important as the surfaces of the drawings themselves. In recent years, she has been experimenting with dark and light surfaces. The ceiling of our consciousness and our perception of it is where infinity begins. There, everything can be found and nothing at all, and it is all indescribable.
Her imaginative work strikes a balance between black and white, with blackish and silvery strokes featuring in the middle. But everything points upwards, towards the sky and even beyond, where the whiteness of the paper takes over. The Day and Night and Night and Day series reflects the shifts that Konec creates with each of her pencil strokes on the white and dark surfaces.
