Andrej Brumen Čop

A Thousand Cranes

23. 5. 2018–30. 6. 2018

An overview of works by one of the most renowned artists of Slovenian contemporary art. The exhibition presents paintings, watercolours, and books from the painter’s different creative periods, from 2012–2016.

Transient within transient
Passing moments, passing existence of everything and its perception.

Andrej Brumen - Čop’s creations are barely visible images. His more recent works have been painted with water-soluble paints and ink on paper. The surfaces feature everything from people, animals and objects to events... Some of the latest series of works feature everything that lives, which can be perceived within seconds. Smoke, steam, moths that live for just a few days, birds flying across the sky and leaving... who knows where... Brumen - Čop chose them to depict transience. The transience of his perception of what he paints and the transience of everything that exists for mere seconds. A few moments from his and our existence. Life in everything that we see (if we live). Truly.

KOZMOS
I STOPPED TAKING PICTURES
I STOPPED USING ANIMAL GLUE
I STARTED TO EXPLORE PAPER
RETIRED TO THE STUDIO
FACED MYSELF
AND FOLLOWED MY INTUITION
__
A DICTATION COMMANDS THE SEQUENCE OF
DRAWING PAINTING CONSTRUCTION
WRITING READING TRANQUILITY
__
THE SPACE WAS EMPTY
I NEEDED FLEXIBLE STRUCTURES
SO I STARTED BUILDING SPACES FROM BAMBOO STICKS
TO FOLLOW IDEAS COMING FROM THE NEEDS OF MY BODY
IMAGES APPEARED AS AN ECHO/AFTERIMAGE OF THE VISIBLE
BUT ALSO AS FANTASIES AND CONSTRUCTIONS
__
OR PERHAPS WITH LIGHT AND SPACES
__
YEARS AGO I WORKED WITH OIL
BUT NOW I RARELY PAINT ON CANVAS
I PREFER PAPER AND WATERCOLOURS
BECAUSE OF THEIR FRAGILE LIFE
I USE STARCH TO PASTE PAPER LIKE A WALLPAPER
ON A WALL OR ANY OTHER SURFACE
WITH WHICH IS MELTS TOGETHER
I LIKE TO SAY THAT MY DRAWINGS SINK INTO THE WALL
__
THE DICTATION OF WHAT I SHOULD DO NEXT
IS GETTING STRICTER
