Paintings 2016–2023

Blažka Križan

Intertwined Shapes

18. 10. 2023–18. 11. 2023

Blažka Križan works with cutting various monochromatic paper surfaces. In this way she creates longitudinal undulating shapes which are then sequenced to create integral forms that together constitute a similar wavy image.

Her art invites us to explore shapes in their multidimensionality. They are geometrical yet close to biomorphic, floating in a field of illusiveness where natural patterns are never far away. The shapes are placed in such a way that they appear to be floating on the surface. Due to the flat material with cut out art and the play of light and shadow, the pieces take on an extremely three-dimensional character. Križan's works are complete pieces that are aesthetically and artistically (theoretically) grounded in a broad understanding of art in general.
The exhibition Into the Space in Bežigrad Gallery 1 featured objects created in 2015. The artworks [PS1] were created by Lea Culetto, Blažka Križan and Nika Vučko. Into the Space was, in fact, the first step towards the exhibition Intertwined Shapes and the forthcoming group exhibition Cut Out From Paper, which will open in November 2023 in Bežigrad Gallery 2.

About the artwork
The main idea behind my work is repetition along with the paper cutting technique This technique gives the pieces a three-dimensional feel. As light shines through the cuts, the image doubles in its shadow, thus giving the impression of flickering when looking at it from different angles.
The gestural nature of the line fades due to the use of the scalpel, but each cut still hints at the presence of the hand. At the same time, the cuts offer the viewer the chance to reconstruct the act of perforation in their mind and connect with the creative process, which is crucial for me.
By multiplying the simplicity of a single sign/cut I create various compositions that resemble organic structures, such as op art motifs, depending on the patterns I explore.
The Linear, Undulation and Circular series feature cuts made close together to create a seemingly moving picture. The Loop and Intertwinement series create similar effects owing to the complexity of the patterns, which make it difficult to follow the segments of loops that keep escaping the eye.
The Outwards and Meander series play with the optical effects of light and shadow and the texture of paper. Here, the cuts are not complete – the cut sections are lifted to partially obstruct the area behind the image. The structure becomes relief-like, and the signs are cut in various directions, which creates “shadow patterns” because some parts catch more light than others, depending on the orientation of the cut. These works thus somehow include colour in the form of light and shadow behind the image.
Blažka Križan

Blažka Križan was born in 1990 in Ptuj. She obtained her BA in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts with Professor Marjan Gumilar in 2012, and completed her master’s in painting in 2017 with Professors Zmago Lenárdič and Jure Mikuž, PhD. Križan was awarded the Prešeren Award for students for her master's thesis. While studying she focused on the paper cutting technique. In 2018 she received the Primavera DLUM Award from the Maribor Fine Artists Society, and two years later the DLUM Award, while in 2022 she won the Ex-tempore Piran Young Author Prize. She is a painter with the status of a self-employed professional in culture. Križan lives and works in Ptuj.
