45 Years From Sketch to Puppet
The annual exhibition From Sketch to Puppet, which has been held in Bežigrad Galleries since 1980, puts on display the art of puppetry and the work of artists who devoted their creative careers to this art form.
Silvan Omerzu is a Slovenian director, painter and puppet artist. He was born in 1955 in Brestanica. After studying at the Academy of Education in Ljubljana, he started working at the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre. In 1983 he received a scholarship to study in Prague, where he specialised in puppet stage design and puppet design. Upon his return to Ljubljana, Omerzu actively focused on his own poetics for adult audiences at the Konj Theatre, which he founded together with director Jan Zakonjšek. With their very first performance, Make Me a Coffin For Him in 1993, they astonished the Slovenian public and earned the theatre a loyal following. In the same year, he decided to leave his job of ten years at the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre and became a freelance artist. He continued to work with the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre on his own or as part of the Konj Theatre, as well as with the Maribor Puppet Theatre, Glej Theatre, Cankarjev dom, Mladinsko Theatre, and theatres in the Czech Republic, Austria, the Netherlands, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro. He lives in Ljubljana.
