Drawings, watercolours, crumplings and paintings 1973–2023

Janko Testen

In a Circle of Shapes

8. 3. 2023–26. 4. 2023

An exhibition overview of works from the last forty years of Janko Testen's career and the painter's second presentation at the Bežigrad Gallery 1 since 1982. The works on display show his artistic world of object and non-object images and have their artistic starting point in paintings from the 1970s.

Remembering
Janko. It was 1 September 1965, the first day of school, when we first met as year one students at the Secondary School for Design. The school had three departments: industrial, fashion and graphic design. The two of us opted for graphic design. The programme included drawing, painting, graphic design, theory of fine art and much more. We were taught by amazing professors, some of them were renowned artists. Their dedication to teaching and encouraging us to create inspired many of us to continue our studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana.
I remember our formative years, and how we struggled through lengthy and difficult semesters. You quickly turned out to be an incredible and sensitive illustrator and an excellent photographer. Perhaps your specific artistic world developed from studying drawing in secondary school and looking at the world through the camera lens.
The exhibition in Bežigrad Gallery 1 puts on display your opus spanning four decades. It is a walk through a vast body of work that relies on precision and accomplishment, which is a rare trait to be found in contemporary painters.
