Artist talk: Tanja Lažetić & Barbara Sterle Vurnik

The overview exhibition Laž (Lie) at the City Art Gallery Ljubljana offers a comprehensive insight into the multi-decade oeuvre of Tanja Lažetić, created between 1997 and today. The central conceptual axis of the exhibition explores the fragile relationship between truth and falsehood, questioning how personal and social contexts shape our memory and perception of reality. The artist’s signature approach is based on cuts, seams, and the fragmentation of images, whereby the chosen media—ranging from photography and video to ceramics, artist's books, and painting—act as an integral part of the concept itself, while the empty space, or that which is absent, becomes a vital carrier of unseen messages.
Through a distinctly female lens, yet without direct activism, the artist addresses identity and the body as sites of social control, subtly dismantling them through seemingly banal motifs of flowers or a conceptual entry into the field of painting. The upcoming conversation with curator Barbara Sterle Vurnik provides an excellent opportunity to reveal the curatorial background of the gallery presentation. The event will illuminate the artist's processes of self-historicism, the integration of artificial intelligence into her latest works, and the dynamic between the image and its absence, in which the viewer themselves becomes an active co-creator of artistic meaning.
