Ištvan Išt Huzjan
Winner of the 31st edition of the Biennial of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana (2015) Ištvan Išt Huzjan presents a series of works from the past few years at the City Art Gallery Ljubljana. Some of the works have already been shown as part of various group or solo exhibitions, but this particular exhibition is laid out based on two conceptual foundations divided spatially in accordance with the gallery's physical space.
The exhibition features two formal parts contained within the basic spatial division of the gallery in two floors and eight units as dictated by the gallery's rooms.
The basic conceptual premise of the works exhibited on the first floor of the gallery are paths, or journeys, a consideration on the distances between people, spaces and places, movement through space, and the act of walking, or even simply single steps as basic units of locomotion or movement. Projects that deal with the act of walking are a constant in the artist's musings on society, historically relevant facts, geography and relationships between individuals. Such projects reflect his way of life – since his student years, Huzjan has been constantly moving from one European capital to another. The ephemeral material that serves as the remains or perhaps the proof of the distances that were conquered ranges from photographic material, found objects, gear, accessories, etc. For this exhibition, all of the walking related projects are presented in the form of photographic documentation, allowing the artist to take us through a vast number of geographic and social spaces.
The objects exhibited on the second floor of the gallery range from works relating to the projects on the first floor to works that have been created within the safe confines of the artist's studio, where his subtle interplay between basic components, the physical assets and laws that govern objects and the frailty of the materials he uses weave into a playful narrative that showcases the artist's view on reality. The gradation of the works exhibited on the second floor is based on the viewer's linear movement from room to room, as dictated by the layout of the gallery space. From the bird's eye view of the first room through the layout of the next two spaces, the author shifts the viewer's gaze ever more into a vertical position. This, coupled with the relaxed horizontal lines of the first floor, form the exhibition's final dynamic spatial layout.
The exhibition is part of the 32nd Biennial of Graphic Arts Ljubljana and it is organized in collaboration with the International Centre of Graphic Arts.
