WATER

24. 6. 2015–8. 5. 2016

We exist on a water planet.70% of its surface is covered by water and  97% of it is salt water, 2% is fresh water in the form of ice and only  the remaining 1% is drinking water, which is divided around the planet  very irregularly. The Slovenian capital with its hinterland can boast  rich water resources that enabled 5,000 years of continuous habitation  and are still freely accessible today.

The exhibition and its contents are thematically connected to Ljubljana being the European Green Capital 2016. Through four main stories in different timelines, the exhibition presents the importance of water. It is essential for our survival, the transport of humans, goods, ideas and knowledge, our mythologies and beliefs, art and language. The listed themes are presented to our visitors throughout a thoughtful display of almost 250 different objects from the various collections of the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana. Our visitors can learn about the importance of water within the water cycle and ecology, as well as the care given to preserving drinking water in the experimental room of the museum, which will also serve as a platform for numerous educational programmes dedicated to families, nurseries, and primary and secondary schools.

The main exhibition Water is currently accompanied by the smaller exhibition Ljubljana’s public company Vodovod–Kanalizacija: A Company with a 125-year-long Tradition. This will be followed by H2OLLAND, an exhibition by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. When 2016 rolls around the exhibition Ljubljana, European Green Capital 2016 will commemorate the celebrations in the Slovenian capital from the latter half of January until early May.

The exhibition Stream of Life, already standing in the museum’s basement, present students of the Secondary School of Photography and Design to the visitors of the museum. From February 2016 the basement will display a new exhibition titled Communal Infrastructure of the Roman City of Emona.

Water in the museum – Water in the city
As water is ubiquitous in our capital, the exhibition Water is going to “spill” all over Ljubljana with different projects. At the French Revolution Square, in front of the museum’s entrance, the project Downpour by the artist Matej Andraž Vogrinčič is already on show. During summer the Jakopič Promenade in Tivoli Park will display a water-themed photo exhibition One Planet, One Water conceived and curated by Maja Bahar and Irena Šinkovec. Last but not least, in spring of 2016 the Krakovo Embankment will be spiced up by photos themed around the Ljubljanica River.

Museum Water – Water for the future
Our planet will not run out of water as it has nowhere else to go. However, due to wrong decisions and actions we can run out of potable water. This grave warning is the second message of the exhibition. As a reminder how important clean drinking water is we, in collaboration with JP Vodovod-Kanalizacija, designed a special water bottle named Museum Water – Water for the future. Since prehistory water has had a very special relationship with our city. Museum Water is here to tell us that Ljubljana is a city in which fresh drinking water is a common good. Here to tell us that Ljubljana is rich with water. This very richness is one of the reasons why our city is soon receiving the honorary title Ljubljana – European Green Capital 2016.

The exhibition WATER will be on show at the City Museum of Ljubljana from 24 June 2015 until 8 May 2016.
