An installation dedicated to lacemakers

Golden hands

28. 11. 2013–31. 12. 2013

Between November 28 and December 31, 2013, the City Museum's café is hosting an installation dedicated to lacemakers. The exhibition honours the 250th anniversary of the Ljubljana lace-making school, the first of its kind in today's Slovenia.

For centuries thousands of lacemakers all over the world made laces for various court and church needs, aristocracy and bourgeoisie, celebrations and special events. In harsh work environments they wove hours, days, weeks, months and even years of their lives into their products. These women lost their eyesight and health to the filigree details and to the posture their work forced them into. Badly paid, anonymous and ignored, they created masterpieces that were unattainable for them – a symbol of wealth and luxury, created by their own hands and yet, they never achieved it nor were they made part of it.

This year commemorates the 250th anniversary of the first lace-making school in Slovenia, established in Ljubljana, 1763. For the occasion Afrodita Hebar Kljun, designer and lacemaker, prepared an installation in collaboration with lacemakers from Slovenia and abroad at the café of the City Museum dedicated to all lacemakers – present and past.

Installation is on view from November 28 to December 31, 2013.

Exhibition opening: Thursday, November 28, 2013, at 6 p.m.
