New archeological findings on display in the Treasury of the City Museum of Ljubljana

31. 1. 2012–28. 2. 2012

The archaeological research underway in the area of 6 and 8 Krojaška ulica in the old city centre of Ljubljana has yielded some interesting finds dating back to Antiquity, and in particular the Middle Ages and the modern era. Some of the finds are on display in the Treasury of the City Museum of Ljubljana.

Even though the area under consideration is located within the old city centre, an area that has in the past been subject to numerous cultural-historical analyses, no archaeological research has so far been undertaken there. Many traces of human activity (a host of finds, remains of masonry and wooden architecture etc.) have been found in the documented and investigated area which reveal that the strip of land between the castle hill and the Ljubljanica river was intensively inhabited during Antiquity and in particular in the Middle Ages and the modern era.

The finds that have been discovered can be regarded as a significant novelty since no traces of the “pre-urban” stage of the medieval settlement have previously been unearthed in this part of Ljubljana. The remains of some wooden architecture are certainly the most surprising and, in chronological terms, date back to the very beginnings of medieval Ljubljana, i.e. to the 10th or 11th centuries. The remarkably well-preserved wooden elements (posts, beams and carefully treated boards) facilitate both a relatively reliable reconstruction of the structure itself (based on the finds it can be assumed it was a tannery workshop) and a series of inter-disciplinary analyses.
The said finds represent one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the last few years in Ljubljana.
