Though long for its beauties Ljubljana was known

8. 2. 2016–8. 2. 2016

The 200th anniversary of Julija Primic (1816–1864), the muse of France Prešeren and his poetry, will be commemorated with an exhibition of a ball dress, which was tailored after Langus’ famous portrait of Julija Primic. The young woman is depicted in a fashionable white Biedermeier dress and draped with a blue veil. On view on 8 February!

The author of the dress is Martina Blažko, a postgraduate student of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering. She got her inspiration from a portrait treasured by the City Museum of Ljubljana.

Admission free.

The portrait of Julija Primic by Matevž Langus was probably done in 1836–37, when Julija was already Scheuchenstühl’s bride. Prešeren probably saw the portrait when it was still a work in process. It is a typical Biedermeier work of art, a portrait of a young lady adorned with sumptuous jewellery and in a fashionable white dress. The contrast of the blue colour of the scarf, fixed on the shoulder by her right hand, creates an extraordinary feeling of a moment captured in time.
