Ljubljana is proud to be European Green Capital 2016! This prestogious title from the European Commision is a great honour and the highest recognition of our efforts to reach the primary goal of ensuring a high quality of life of our citizens in a beautiful and healthy environment.
In its explanatory statement, the Commission highlights that we have made the greatest improvements in quality of life in the shortest period.
We are proud of our achievements, we are proud that Ljubljana for now is the only European Greeen Capital in central in southeast Europe. However, we are also aware that despite everything that has been accomplished so far we still have many challanges to face in the future. We shall face them with same vigour and energy, and we will follow the way forward that we have set fot ourselves.
Interesting facts:
- The Slovenian capital is one of the few European capitals which can boast of having tap water which is perfectly drinkable without pre-treatment.
- As many as 74% of apartments in Ljubljana are heated by the district heating system using
natural gas. - Ljubljana is the European capital with the highest share, 65%, of separated waste collected and is the first capital in the EU in the ‘zerowaste’ programme.
- Ljubljana is high on the list of the world’s most sustainable tourist destinations, as shown by winning the Destination Award in the 2015 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards.
- The city centre, which was once the domain of cars and buses, is now mostly dedicated to pedestrians and cyclists. The city’s public transport is becoming ever more accessible and user-friendly to passengers.
- Ljubljana has 542 square metres of public green space per resident, while the city features 80 hectares of newly maintained green spaces, and maintained green spaces are still being created from degraded urban land.
