Spaces of Movement

40 years of Ljubljana’s LGBT Community

24. 10. 2024–23. 3. 2025

On the spaces for gathering, support, and organized advocacy of the LGBT movement, which have been shaping the urban culture and social life of the capital for 40 years.

Equality and equal rights for LGBT people in Slovenia have improved over the last 20 years, thanks mainly to the nearly forty years of tireless work by numerous civil society organizations, groups, and individuals, as well as their local and international allies. The expansion of this movement from Ljubljana to the entire country and beyond has been marked by a difficult and complex journey, both in terms of societal acceptance and awareness, as well as legal and formal provisions intended to enable a dignified life for every individual within our society.

The exhibition is part of the "40 Years of the LGBT Movement" project, which aims to become a platform for artistic engagement and public awareness about the history and development of the LGBT movement in Ljubljana and Slovenia. The project is designed in partnership with the ŠKUC Association, the Museum of Recent and Contemporary History of Slovenia, and the City Museum of Ljubljana, in collaboration with other relevant organizations. Throughout the year, exhibitions and other events will be held, each shedding light on the topic from different perspectives.
