Ivan Standl - a Zagreb photographer
The legacy of portrait and field photography of the city of Zagreb in the 19th century.
Ivan Standl (1832–1897), a Czech by birth, is one of the major representatives of early photography in Croatia. His long career and complex body of work have earned him numerous awards. He ran a professional studio in Zagreb from the mid-1860s until his death. He photographed the city's inhabitants, natural and cultural highlights, various artefacts, and he also took photographs for the purposes of scientific research. He held the title of the Academy photographer and worked as an authorised court photographer. He is remembered as one of the chroniclers of the great Zagreb earthquake of 1880. The concept of this exhibition is based on his genre versatility, as it presents the most representative works from well-known local collections in four thematic groups, thus trying to show why he was called the “unsurpassed Zagreb photographer” by Gjuro Szabo, the former director of the Zagreb City Museum. The exhibition is a partnership between the Zagreb City Museum, the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and the Museum of Arts and Crafts.
