The Fates of a Stranger from Prule

An Unusual Burial from the Archaeological Site near the Janez Levec Centre

25. 11. 2025–8. 2. 2026

In Roman mythology, the destiny of both humans and gods was in the hands of three women known as the Parcae: Nona spun the thread of an individual’s fate, Decima measured it, and Morta ultimately cut it. In accordance with this tradition, possible interpretations are presented below of the life and death of a person from a burial pit uncovered during archaeological investigations conducted in the area of the planned extension of the Janez Levec Centre in Prule between April and November 2025.

Along a prehistoric and later Roman road, a burial pit was found containing a deceased individual lying on his left side in a crouched position. Only the lower limbs, with a noticeable healed injury on the left shin, as well as the pelvis, part of the ribcage, and part of the lower jaw, were preserved.

A group of 61 silver coins was found in the grave: 9 large and 51 small Celtic silver coins, as well as a denarius of Emperor Augustus. The position and number of the coins, along with traces of fabric on some, suggest that they were stored in a pouch, which the deceased had attached or tied around his waist. The iron brooch indicates that the man was probably of middle or lower social status, as it was not made of a more precious alloy, and that at the time of his death he was dressed in a thicker cloak or mantle.

The deceased was not buried according to contemporary customs—neither indigenous nor Roman. Instead of being cremated and his ashes placed in an urn, the body was simply laid into the ground. Such a burial suggests that he may have been someone on the margins of society, or without a clear sense of belonging. Yet the pouch of silver coins reveals another possibility: perhaps he was a merchant, a notable, or a traveller who navigated society well. Did the contents of the pouch play a role in his fate? Was he the victim of robbery, conflict, or misfortune? Or did passers-by simply bury him where he died? Scholars are now investigating who the mysterious man with the silver coin pouch was—and what story his remains have yet to tell.
