80 Years Free
The exhibition of posters designed by students of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Engineering at the University of Ljubljana offers an insight into diverse interpretations of the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and is connected, both in content and in form, with the exhibition1495 Days Ljubljana During World War II. The graphic statements, created during the academic years 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 as part of the course Visual Analysis of Graphic Products 2, build a bridge between the past and the present, with a view to a free future.
Artistic statements in the form of posters interpret war and peace while commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The voices of the young creators are not constrained, though perhaps seemingly framed within a rectangular format, and they establish a dialogue between recent history and contemporary times. Through a variety of media expressions — ranging from typographic solutions, digitally created drawings and illustrations, photography and photomontage, to traditional collages and those produced using contemporary 3D graphic software — the works draw upon the legacy of key figures in Slovenian graphic design.
The graphic solutions, or statements, are complemented by slogans that further develop their semantic visual expression. Among them are: “A World That Promised Peace”, “Aged, Yet Once Again Burning in the Flames of Conflict”, “Inflated in Peace”, “The Wire Has Fallen”, “Floating on the Wings of Freedom for 80 Years”, and “For 80 Years We Have Gazed at a Peaceful Sky”. Through these captions, the graphic concepts are presented to viewers without moralising — perhaps as a warning that, despite an apparent peace, the rumble of weapons can still be heard in our own space.
