Roman doctor's grave from the Slovenska Street
During the renovation of the Slovenska Street in the spring of 2015, archaeologists came across an incredible discovery of an almost 2000 years old Roman grave. The anthropological analysis of the bones and numerous grave goods, preserved under the stone lid for almost two millennia, point towards the fact that this was a grave of a female doctor, a surgeon, from the colony of Emona in the second half of the 1st century AD.
The metallic cup has engravings of fauna (birds) and flora on the outer rim. The grave goods are in accordance to Roman beliefs in the afterlife, objects which are mostly connected with the enabling the passage of the deceased to the afterlife (food, beverage, money), and objects which were of special value to the deceased or something that the person used at work (personal belongings, tools, weapons).
The tools found in the cinerarium among the decomposed wooden fragments, certainly belong among the latter. The objects were first stored in a wooden container, which has since completely decomposed. The bronze scalpels with iron handles, tweezers, a needle and other artefacts are basically no different from tools one might still encounter in a doctor’s office even today.

The grave of the Emonan doctor is now on view at the Treasury of the City Museum for the very first time. The exhibition is complemented with the texts of the head archaeologist Martin Horvat (MGML), field archaeologist Rene Masaryk (Skupina STIK group) and head conservator Matjaž Bizjak (MGML).
