Pop-up concert: Music According to Plečnik's Taste
Plečnik's Triple Bridge in the heart of Ljubljana is set to host a special musical treat: a pop-up concert featuring music that pleased the architectural genius Jože Plečnik. The event is part of the Open Atelier European project.
“As a versatile artist, Jože Plečnik had a great appreciation for different genres of art, from sculpture and painting to music. Among other things, he said of music that it is 'the most primal expression of the human soul' and the most direct revelation of the mysteries of creation. We are delighted to be able to explore and create new ways of bringing our cultural heritage closer to the public in different ways, and to engage and actively involve the public in the contemporary interpretation and use of our heritage,” said Ana Porok, Curator of the Plečnik House, on the occasion of the Open Atelier project and public event.
Plečnik appreciated the music of Frédéric Chopin and said of him, “He carried the whole construction in his heart - his compositions seem to come straight from the heart.” For Plečnik, Mozart was “the ruler and king of melody”, and for Beethoven he said he was “a great sufferer - he is not for every day”. Works by Mozart, Chopin and Beethoven, as well as Piazzolla and Tchaikovsky, will be part of the repertoire of the Ljubljana Pop-Up Concert with performers Inga Ulokina, academic violinist, and Olga Ulokina, musicologist, composer and pianist. The concert audience will also be addressed by curator Ana Porok and Jeanne Rank Schelde, representative of the Open Atelier project's lead partner, curator at the Art Museums of Skagen, Denmark.
Cultural heritage for a sustainable future
The interactive and inclusive element of the event in Ljubljana will be carried out by all the partners of the Open Atelier project, who will also address the audience gathered on the Triple Bridge about the power of cultural heritage and how it can contribute to reaching the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations. As Jeanne Rank Schelde, representative of the project's lead partner, pointed out, “the event aims to open up a joint debate on the role of museums in the modern world, in addition to finding and creating new audience-oriented and collaborative museum experiences. We want to stimulate critical thinking about the links between cultural heritage, the museums that preserve and provide access to it, and the important challenges we face in the world today. Through this event, we aim to highlight how museums can harness the connection between cultural heritage and people to promote positive change and support the building of a sustainable, just, prosperous and peaceful future.”
The event is part of the European project Open Atelier - Building new innovative formats for active audience participation and interaction with cultural heritage within European House Museums, and it is happening as part of the project workshop taking place in Ljubljana from 4 to 7 September 2023.
The event is free of charge.
In case of rain, the concert will take place at the City Museum of Ljubljana, Gosposka 15.
