Plečnik Awards 2023:
Exhibition of the winners
Every year, The Architect Jože Plečnik Foundation announces the Plečnik Awards, the main public recognition of Slovenian authors for their outstanding creations in the fields of architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture or interior design. This year's prize and award winners are presented in an exhibition at the Plečnik House.
This year, the expert jury composed of Aljoša Dekleva (chairman), Matej Kučina, Meta Kutin, Anja Planišček and Špela Spanžel selected the winners in the renewed categories of the awards: for architectural realisation on a larger scale, for architectural realisation on a smaller scale, for public space, for professional journalism, for enrichment of the spatial culture. The jury awarded one Plečnik Prize, three Plečnik Medals and two student scholarships.
The Plečnik Prize in the category of small-scale architectural realisations was awarded to the Open Library in the Vič Primary School in Ljubljana and its authors Matjaž Bolčina, Ernesto Milčinović and Jan Žonta.
The Plečnik Medal in the category of architectural realisation on a larger scale was awarded to the work Kindergarten Kočevje, unit Čebelica, by Jure Hrovat, Ana Kreč and Katja Paternoster, and landscape architecture by Darja Matjašec, Nejc Florjanc and Katja Mali.
The Plečnik Medal in the category of public space went to the project Crater, typology of urban wilderness and the authors of the multidisciplinary collective Crater: Gaja Mežnarić Osole, Andrej Koruza, Danica Sretenović, Rok Oblak, Primož Turnšek, Sebastjan Kovač, Anamari Hrup, Eva Jera Hanžek, Amadeja Smrekar, Altan Jurca Avci and the Prostorož association.
The Plečnik Medal for the enrichment of spatial culture was awarded to the project Together in Community: Seventy Years of Cooperative Homes as Social Infrastructure, which was realised in the form of a Slovenian pavilion at the International Architecture Exhibition in Venice in 2021, and an accompanying book and events. The authors and curators of the pavilion, the research project, the exhibition and the book are Blaž Babnik Romaniuk, Martina Malešič, Rastko Pečar, Asta Vrečko, Anja Delbello, Aljaž Vesel, Nuša Jurkovič, Samo Kralj, Vid Hajnšek and Jana Jocif.
In the end, the jury was also pleased to award two equivalent scholarships from the Plečnik Foundation: to Sebastjan Cvelbar for his master's thesis Conceptual Metabolism of the Economic/Legislative Space and the Design of a Potemkin City in the City of Ljubljana; and to Lenart Pian for his master's thesis Can We Build Differently? Conceptual design of a hempcrete factory in Šmatevž near Gomilsko.
Prof. mag. Boštjan Vuga, President of The Architect Jože Plečnik Foundation, emphasised at the award ceremony that "the Foundation awards the works that connect artistic imagination with contemporary social, political, economic, technological and environmental developments, and which prove that their author is not only an active creator of space, but of society as a whole. It also continues the tradition of widening the field of action of architects. The artists work in original, multidisciplinary teams, and the prizes are awarded to works that represent the re-use of spaces, works that are temporary and unfinished."
This year's winners are also featured in a documentary by director Dominik Mence and director of photography Rok Kajzer Nagode (video with English subtitles):
