Master Woodcarver Maks Bergant and Plečnik: The Charm of Wood

21. 5. 2025–28. 3. 2026

After its successful presentation at the Plečnik House, the exhibition 'Master Woodcarver Maks Bergant and Plečnik: The Charm of Wood' moved to Kamnik – the town where Bergant spent most of his creative life. Its display at the Inter-municipal Museum Kamnik at Zaprice Castle is both a tribute to a local artist and an opportunity for visitors to discover a valuable heritage that was born in Kamnik yet transcended local boundaries.

The exhibition sheds light on the creative dialogue between architect Jože Plečnik and master woodcarver from Kamnik, Maks Bergant. It highlights their collaboration on the design of the Church of St. Benedict in Stranje, considered one of the most important sacred works of Plečnik’s late creative period. At the forefront are the artisanal details created in close collaboration with Bergant, who translated Plečnik’s ideas with masterfully executed ornamentation and his own artistic sensitivity. Learn more about the exhibition.

Mag. Zora Torkar, Director of the Inter-municipal Museum Kamnik, highlights:
“For the guest exhibition from the Plečnik House we decided above all because master woodcarver Maks Bergant was a native of Kamnik and for many years his creative space was his little ‘Bajtica’ beneath Mali grad. Many people of Kamnik are well acquainted with his works, and some even preserve them as precious heritage. Kamnik is also linked to architect Jože Plečnik after the Second World War, which gives this exhibition, shedding light on their artistic collaboration, a special significance. This is especially true because they worked together on the renovation of the church in Stranje, as well as on the furnishing of churches in Kamnik and its surroundings.”

Ana Porok, curator of the Plečnik House and author of the exhibition, adds:
“We are very pleased that the exhibition, which premiered in February at the Plečnik House, is now being hosted in Kamnik – the town where Maks Bergant created his entire artistic oeuvre. His carvings are still present here – either in family ownership or on public display, for example in the church on Šutna or in the Church of St. Benedict in Stranje. The latter is considered one of the highlights of the creative dialogue between the two masters – Bergant and Plečnik.”

The exhibition invites visitors to take a deeper look at the mastery of wooden ornamentation and an artistic collaboration that continues to inspire today with its reverent interweaving of tradition and artistic vision.
