Vlasto Kopač:

The Unwavering Humanist

23. 4. 2026–31. 12. 2026

The exhibition Vlasto Kopač: The Unwavering Humanist, first presented at the Plečnik House in 2023 on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the architect’s birth, is travelling to the Žiri Museum this year as part of the programme dedicated to the life and work of Vlasto Kopač.

Conceived by curator Ana Porok in collaboration with Mojca Kopač, the architect’s daughter, the exhibition sheds light on the multifaceted work of one of the most important, yet often overlooked, Slovenian creators of the twentieth century.

Vlasto Kopač (1913–2006), a student and collaborator of Jože Plečnik, left a lasting mark on numerous fields, ranging from architecture, graphic design and heritage conservation to the study of ethnological heritage and the development of Velika Planina. His work was grounded in the ethical principles of Plečnik’s School and characterised by a profound respect for place, tradition and people.

Through archival materials, plans, photographs and personal objects, the exhibition traces Kopač’s life and career – from his student years under Jože Plečnik and his involvement in significant architectural projects to his activities during the World War II and the post-war period, when, despite severe personal hardships, he remained steadfast in his principles and dedicated to his work.

The exhibition’s presentation at the Žiri Museum forms part of the project Vlasto Kopač – Creator of Space, Guardian of Heritage and Memory, through which we commemorate the twentieth anniversary of Kopač’s death. In cooperation with numerous partner institutions, the project seeks to provide a comprehensive insight into his rich legacy and to enhance public awareness of his work.

Curator Ana Porok emphasises:
“With his exceptional dedication, creative breadth and strong ethical compass, Vlasto Kopač left a lasting mark on numerous fields, from architecture to heritage conservation. It therefore seems particularly important that his work is also presented in the environment where he was born. The exhibition’s presentation in Žiri offers an opportunity to reconsider his legacy and bring it closer to new generations.”

The exhibition thus reopens a view onto Kopač’s rich creative legacy and his significant role in shaping Slovenia’s architectural and cultural landscape.

Exhibition opening: Thursday, 23 April 2026, at 7 pm, Žiri Museum.
The exhibition will be opened by Franci Kranjc, Mayor of the Municipality of Žiri, and Ana Porok, curator of Plečnik House and author of the exhibition.
