Zvonko Čoh

Capriccio – I Doodle over Whatever I See

3. 12. 2015–8. 2. 2016

An exhaustive insight into artistic functioning, often related to the elementarity of everyday and caught in creative stories, is also provided by the overall exhibition of the academic painter Zvonko Čoh. The visual journey into numerous artistic narratives is taking place in his so-far most comprehensive exhibition at the City Art Gallery Ljubljana (MGML), titled "Capriccio – Vse, kar vidim, počečkam" [Capriccio—I Doodle over Whatever I See].

The complete selection of exhibited artworks aims at four substantially and technically formally explicit and fundamental lines that reinforce and underscore all essential features of Čoh’s artistic poetics. These are Telefonizmi (drawings), "Vse, kar vidim, počečkam" (miniatures – small formats, which serve as the basis for painting on larger formats), illustrations featured only on video projections and cartoons. "Telefonizmi" [Telephonisms] are predominantly black-and-white drawings that Čoh creates while performing different daily tasks, for example, making phone calls, which the term innately implies. Čoh makes the drawings using pencils, dry crayons, marker pens and an array of other writing instruments. The author takes a large number of drawings featuring different thematic motifs and formats and turns them into small or more comprehensive artistic compositions, characterized by set-up flexibility, elasticity and adaptability to exhibition spaces. By evoking a sense of easiness, playful haphazardness and spontaneity, the works exhibit a great measure of humorousness and seriousness at the same time. The drawings contain elements of extension, which means that individual details repeat as well as extend or blend one into the other, so that in an integrated set-up they form an author-guided succession and highlighted sequence of events, which may change, increase or decrease (depending on the exhibition and spatial opportunities).

The story itself comes to the fore in the second part or line of the set-up, in a series of drawings that the author defined with the thematic title "Vse, kar vidim, počečkam" and that serve as the bases for large paintings. This cluster of artworks mostly includes drawings and paintings from drawings that were produced over the last four years, during which the artist made intensive preparations for this exhibition. The fundamental carriers of these works – particularly paintings – are various-size prints with images of original, artistically enlarged envelopes or money order forms that the author, through creative intervention, colored using acrylic or tempera paints. Čoh doodles—as he describes his work– and uses a multi-layered technique of laying and overlaying images to create tiny, highly personal artistic narratives. The boundaries between depictions are blurred, and many shapes float in spaces that are defined but not sufficiently refined to achieve the finality of the image. The artist paints multitudes of fragments caught in different geometrically organized artistic rhythms with meticulously arranged captions.

News

“Bills are a burden. Why wouldn’t you scribble on them?”

“Zvonko Čoh shops at Interspar, is insured at Zavarovalnica Maribor, he is a member of the AMZS, a Telemach subscriber, a member of the Association of Slovene Fine Artists Societies ... We can discern all of this from the large bills depicted on canvases, which served him more as an inspiration and the occasional joke (like when Snaga reads as naga, naked)."

“Playfully Čoh”

“If I had to choose my favourite exhibition from 2015, I would point towards Zvonko Čoh at the City Art Gallery. Among the plethora of artists that eventually have to present their work, most of them forget about having an aesthetically attractive image. Čoh’s paintings are visually pleasant and clear, and despite their complex and detailed design, they contain a clear message."
