Made in Us

20. 12. 2013–26. 1. 2014

The exhibition, where painting is being integrated with photography, the analogue with the digital, and the individual with the collective, is presenting the works of Uroš Abram, Uroš Weinberger, Mark Požlep, Luka Uršič and Miha Štrukelj. In the foreground there is a story, narrated by the arists.

The story and the play with different visual media form the foundation for the communication between the creator and the viewer – consumer. As Renata Štebih wrote in the text, accompanying the exhibition: "Visual media equals code, equals language and speech. The current exhibition tackles the familiar codes used as language by several Slovenian artists. All of them use codes putting the established perceptions of visual media out of joint: Uroš Abram's photographs taken with camera oralis appear painting-like, whereas the participating painters Uroš Weinberger, Mark Požlep, Luka Uršič and Miha Štrukelj all produce quite photography-like works. Naturally, these authors are not the first ones to express doubts regarding the myth of how certain media should speak, this is actually of no concern to them. Without prejudice, they use the media for the very same purpose that artists have been using art for millennia. To express themselves. Within this project, the painters intervene, paint on photographs, and the photographer places digital photo portraits of painters into their works."

As such, the exhibition also deals with the questions, concerning the ability of media, deceit and narration, and finally – it inteferes with our set perceptions regarding specific media based on what is generally established rather than a profound consideration of each media.

Uroš Abram was born in 1982 in Novo mesto, Slovenia. After studying at FAMU Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where he graduated in 2010, he worked in advertising, education, and was mostly active in the field of signature photography. He has shown his works at several solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions. After successful presentations at art fairs, such as Paris Photo (2010, Carrousel du Louvre) and FotoFever (2012, Brussels, with Fotografija Gallery, which represents him as an author), he was among 18 Slovenian artists to be presenting Slovenian art at the European Central Bank in Frankfurt (2012) as well as one of the many authors, whose works were exhibited at the exhibition Designing the Republic (20. Anniversary of Slovenia's independence, 2012). His works were also exhibited in Božidar Jakac Gallery (Monastery Church, Kostanjevica na Krki) – he was the only photographer and the youngest author to exhibit there.

Uroš Weinberger (b. 1975) finished his studies in painting in 2003 and completed his Master's degree in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana in 2005. In 2002 he perfected his studies at the National Academy of Art Sofia, Bulgaria. He received several awards, such as Prešeren Student's Award by University of Ljubljana in 2001 and in 2011 he was the winner of the Biennial Exhibition – A Look at Visual Arts in Slovenia 6: I, Here, Now. In 2009 he participated at Artist-in-residence program of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia in Berlin, Germany. In 2013 he participated at Artist-in-residence program at European House of Art, Upper Bavaria-Schafhof in Freising, Germany. He lives and works as an independent visual artist in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Luka Uršič was born in Maribor in 1982. After completing the Secondary School for Design and Photography, Ljubljana, he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts, Ljubljana, between 2004 and 2006. Since 2009, he has been collaborating with the artist Jaša. He is a member of the group LEFTFINGER developing audio-visual performances. Since 2010, he has been member of the audio-visual team LO-HI-FI. He lives and works in Ljubljana.

Miha Štrukelj, born in Ljubljana in 1973, has completed his postgraduate studies at the Academy of Fine Arts, Ljubljana. In 2008, he received the Henkel Art Award, and a year later he was representing Slovenia at the Venice Biennale. He was granted a scholarship by the Pollock-Krasner Foundation headquartered in New York, and by the Slovenian Ministry of Culture, and participated in several artist-in-residence programmes abroad. He has held several solo and group exhibitions, and his works are part of various collections, particularly in Vienna, Frankfurt, Paris and Ljubljana.

Mark Požlep was born in Celje in 1981. In 2006 he graduated in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts, where he was also a postgraduate student of visual communications between 2006 and 2009. Currently, he is a postgraduate student at LUCA School of Arts, Brussels. He has shown his works at several solo and group exhibitions, and was granted a number of awards and scholarships. Among them were, to mention just a few, a scholarship by the Slovenian Ministry of Culture, Essl Art Award in years 2005 and 2007, and the Prešeren Prize in 2010.
