Densifying
Artists presented at the exhibition: Polona Demšar, Aleksandra Saška Gruden, Zoran Srdić Janežič, Anže Jurkovšek, Spiro Mason, Mojca Smerdu, Jožef Vrščaj, Tomaž Zarifa. The exhibition is a continuation of the theoretical and exhibition research of contemporary Slovenian sculpture with a varied selection of artworks from some of the most prominent Slovenian academic sculptors.
The exploration of contemporary Slovenian sculptural creation is a journey into a material, design, thought and sensory system. It is embedded in relationships where we particular is viewed through the general or where we attach the individual creator and their poetics to the integrity of cultural activity or the artistic historical moment. Today, as well as every time and everywhere, various questions arise about the rationality and expedience of sculptural activities, linked to subjective systematic unity, but also the diversity within sculptures, which at least in art are fluctuating between reality and fiction, between being (perceiving) and feeling (representing). It is then that distinction occurs between the working sculptural matter and the reflecting sculptural structure, which in the finality of the layout represent a certain beauty caught in a systematic organization, linked to cognitive and receptive ability, both of which are associated with pleasure and occasional discomfort and together form aesthetic cognition or energy (subsequent or diverse) of beauty.
This current sculptural exhibition "Densifying "is an intimate experience, as we live within the world of metaphors, concepts and relations, some exclusively general, others subjective. In the world of multiplicity of individuals, sculptures represent a multitude of patterns, archetypes, symbols and ideas that are not bound by religious, ideological or metaphysical systems, but are free materialized forces, types of authorial realizations and perceptions, some kind of mirrors of the ideas themselves. Densifying is part of the matter, and at the same time, part of an idea that the sculptures with author-guided systems are realizing and conceiving as a problem system and at the same time aesthetic pleasure. The idea and presentation of the exhibition "Densifying" derives from the concept of relations between matter, which constitutes sculptures in their interior, and the spatial density of the artefacts into visual narrative. In order to present the greatest possible diversity, the exhibition takes into account three selective criteria. The first one is material diversification, the second generational variety and the third most extensive understanding of sculpture. The exhibition space in the City Art Gallery Ljubljana is somewhat specific, as it consists of rooms that follow in the longitudinal line on both floors, whereby the viewer is forced to walk through each space twice, one way to the very end and then back again. In this visual journey (densifying of the view), one will, perhaps even unintentionally, see the individual work or all the works of authors from different perspectives.
