Jan Fabre

The Borrowed Time

19. 3. 2011–8. 5. 2011

Exhibitions in the City Art Gallery Ljubljana, Tobacco 001 Cultural Centre and Match Gallery are Fabre’s great exhibition comeback. With The Borrowed Time, Umbraculum, The Carnival Of The Dead Street Dogs, and The Catacombs Of The Dead Street Dogs he is represented in retrospective and with recent works.

From 18 March to 24 April, Ljubljana will again host the internationally renowned Belgian multidisciplinary artist, playwright, stage director and choreographer Jan Fabre. In the period 20 March to 24 April, three venues operated by the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana will be staging Fabre's exhibitions, presenting his multi-faceted oeuvre as a visual artist. The venues and the manner of presentation were chosen by the artist himself, with the curator Katrien Bruyneel actually staging the exhibitions.

"The Borrowed Time" comprises photographs of his stage performances made by masters of photography of the latter part of the twentieth century. They are a metamorphosis of a kind, as one medium turns into another, as the oeuvre of one artist becomes the work of another. Umbraculum, The Carnival Of The Dead Street Dogs, and The Catacombs Of The Dead Street Dogs are installations again involving metamorphosis, which take the spectator within grasp of experiences not usually associated with everyday life. In all this Fabre is a storyteller. In the theatre he sits the audience in front of a stage where it is motionless, following the story, recounted with words, sounds, music, movement, and light. In a gallery, museum, or a town square he allows spectators to walk amidst his artworks and compose the story from displayed animals, soil, objects, lights, their interrelations, and seldom sounds. His artworks need no words. They are experienced similarly as the works of Ilya Kabakov or Damien Hirst.
