Metod Frlic
This exhibition will be the most extensive presentation to date of works by the academically trained sculptor, Metod Frlic. Frlic is one of Slovenia’s foremost sculptors, seeing sculpture as an open form and using a variety of materials and sculptural techniques. Many of his works expand into the surrounding space, allowing the viewer to move physically through a world of contemporary sculpture of Frlic’s own creation.
Since 2000, Frlic has added a number of important works in stone, metal and various plastics to his oeuvre. His work is generally considered late modernist, but his development as an artist can be traced through the merging of concrete and abstract images, the development of complex visual and compositional relationships between the figure and its material mass, and the transition to light and airy sculptures with more flexible compositions adapted to the exhibition space. The artist pays a great deal of attention to the rhythms of openness and closedness, the relationship between negatives and positives, which between them create visual dynamism. He takes a study-oriented approach to his art, modelling cycles of sculptures that he then brings to life to create his own, distinctive, comprehensive sculptural narrative.
Metod Frlic is unquestionably one of Slovenia’s leading artists: his extensive oeuvre has raised the profile of contemporary sculpture and established it as an important visual medium in the country.
