“Under the Free Sun” – an artistic intervention in Ljubljana’s centre
As part of the exhibition "Free Sun", currently on view at the City Art Gallery Ljubljana, a live artistic intervention Under the Free Sun will take place in the centre of Ljubljana on Friday, 19 June, between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., with Tam-Tam billboards serving as canvases for the artists Viktor Bernik, Olja Grubić, Duša Jesih, Žiga Kariž, Gorazd Krnc, Arjan Pregl, Simona Semenič, Maja Smrekar, and Sašo Vrabič.
Opened on 11 June at the City Art Gallery Ljubljana, the exhibition Free Sun began to be created during the time of isolation, when the world was struggling with the COVID-19 pandemic. Strict social distancing measures caused not only a two-month postponement of the exhibition, but also a change in its structure. Hindered access to art studios, art supply stores, and other limitations are also reflected in the presented artworks and their mirroring of the zeitgeist as well as various ways of tackling the new reality.
One part of the exhibition is the project Under the Free Sun, which started during the time of isolation, with artists communicating from their studios by sharing video contents on the City Art Gallery’s Facebook page, describing their daily life, and addressing the age of the new reality through artistic language. The project now symbolically continues in the streets. After art institutions have remained closed for a long time and the number of visitors has been negligible due to numerous measures for preventing the spread of infections, the artworks, which will be produced live, are envisaged to bring the artists’ creative process closer to passers-by and enable them to view artworks “under the free sun” without any limitation. Another aim of the artistic intervention in urban space is to transmit the positive message delivered by the chorus of Prrrauuu, a composition recorded by all the collaborating artists, representing the central part of the exhibition Free Sun: “Everything will be OK! It will be great!”
