A controlled climate, air suspension and a military escort up to the Russian border are testimonies to the value of the treasures coming to the City Museum of Ljubljana from various Russian collections.

The selection of more than eighty priceless icons, which will form the exhibition ICONS. Treasures from Russian Museum, on view at the City Museum of Ljubljana from 24 May onwards, will depict the complex and varied iconography and typology of icons within the Orthodox tradition. The exhibition will present select icons from the collections of three of the largest Russian museums – the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Sergiev Posad State History and Art Museum-Preserve, and the Yaroslavl Art Museum. Icons focusing on the veneration of the Most Holy Virgin Mary within the Orthodox Church were chosen by the Russian curators. Chronologically, the exhibition will cover the period from the late 13th to the early 20th century.

To us, the exhibition is a unique opportunity to learn about more than five hundred years of Russian icon-painting history. Therefore, you are cordially invited to visit the City Museum of Ljubljana and follow our updates on the web and social networks where we shall keep you posted about everything surrounding the preparation of this exhibition project.
