temporary exhibition

Plečnik on Brioni

20. 1. 2017–9. 4. 2017

The first of the four temporary exhibitions at the Plečnik House in 2017 is opening on Friday 20 January, at 1.00 pm. The exhibition titled Plečnik on Brioni will display the hitherto unpublished photographs of the architect during his visits of the Brioni while his last completed project, the garden pavilion, was being constructed. The exhibition is a collaboration with the National and University Library.

The exhibition dedicated to the architect’s last fully finished project, the garden pavilion on Brioni islands in 1956. For this exhibition, the Plečnik House teamed up with the Manuscript Collection and Early Printed Collection of the National and University Library, which acquired the treasured donation from Dr. Lojze Gostiša. This donation disclosed hitherto unknown original plans of the pavilion and photographs of Plečnik’s visits of the Brioni Islands. Among the surviving photographs are also Plečnik’s last portraits, taken in the fall of 1956. Especially important is the personal testimony of Dr. Gostiša regarding the circumstances that contributed to the development of this project, which serves as Plečnik’s symbolic testament.

"The architect Tone Bitenc put in a good word for me, so I got a meeting with Prof. Jože Plečnik at the Faculty of architecture on 5 January 1955. I conveyed him the message from the surviving Slovenian fighters, that they wanted him to be the architect of a garden shed, the intended gift for Commandant Tito in Brijuni. Plečnik was happy to oblige," reminisces Dr. Lojze Gostiša about the beginning of his collaboration with Jože Plečnik.

News

Throngs of excited visitors accompanied the opening of the exhibition Plečnik on Brioni on the Brijuni Islands

On Friday 31 May, the atmosphere on the Croatian island of Veliki Brijun was especially ceremonial, as the exhibition Plečnik on Brioni opened there. The exhibition presents Plečnik's last fully completed work – the garden pavilion dedicated to President Tito. This also presented a unique opportunity for visiting the Plečnik pavilion in person.
