23. 5. 2024–1. 9. 2024

Mladen Stropnik has been a presence in the Slovenian and international art scene since 2001. He has established himself as a conceptual artist who works at the intersection of painting, drawing, graphics, and newer intermedia art. His rich and extensive oeuvre will be comprehensively presented for the first time at the City Art Gallery Ljubljana.

The exhibition summarises twenty years of Stropnik's artistic endeavours, while also encompassing his latest production, specifically designed for the exhibition. It highlights key points in the development of Stropnik's art in which humanity is the common theme. Drawing from his everyday life and trivial events, Stropnik questions the understanding of the marginal and the boundary between artistic creation and personal life, exploring what is non-/permitted and un/expected in art. His narration is highly minimalist, yet witty and full of deeper mental conundrums. An important part of his production involves exploring human emotions, particularly on the level of psychological states that occur on the border between wakefulness and dreams. Featured in the exhibition will also be his cult art video series Persone (2002) and Momriding (2002).

The exhibition will be accompanied by the author’s weekly performances and the inclusion of guest artists whom Stropnik invited to collaborate. Including other artists and their works into his creations represents an important and established part of his artistic practice, work methods, and reflection.

Stropnik graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design (ALUO) in Ljubljana in 2001, and then completed his master's studies. He received the Prešeren Prize for Students. He has exhibited his work in several solo shows and participated in numerous group exhibitions both in Slovenia and abroad, among others at the 12th Biennal of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean in Naples, Italy; the Liverpool Biennial; Detroit Museum of New Art in the United States; DUM-Project Space, Ljubljana; Richter Collection, Museum of Contemporary Art Zagreb; Škuc Gallery, Ljubljana; Gregor Podnar Gallery, Ljubljana and Berlin; Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova, Ljubljana; International Centre of Graphic Arts, Ljubljana, and more.
