The prehistoric cart
The current accompanying exhibition is a product of a successful collaboration with the interested public. The exhibition's author, Andrej Pretnar, is an architect with an interest in innovations, while also admiring the works of our predecessors. The maker of the prehistoric cart inspired him to such a degree to name him »Master craftsman« and to make a study and a reconstruction of the oldest cart.
In 2005 he was the only representative from Slovenia and the only one in general with two projects nominated for the INDEX: Award, a design award (a kind of an Oscar for designers, see:
https://designtoimprovelife.dk/). The cart reconstruction fits nicely with the goal of this global exhibition. With an active incorporation of the public the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana is following contemporary trends in museology, while also making cultural heritage more accessible to its visitors with the help of individuals and experts in various fields. We sincerely thank Andrej Pretnar for his collaboration!
“Similar to how etymology reconstructs the origins of a word considering various linguistic laws; a reconstruction of a prehistoric cart goes back in time by recognising elementary laws of construction and understands their influence on the ever-changing cart shape. The reconstruction of the prehistoric cart also represents an emotional experience as the designer relives, with surprise and respect, the creative thought process of a distant Master craftsman.” (Andrej Pretnar)
The exhibition also hosts the documentary Odyssey 5200: The Wheel that Spun the World, which was created in the production of TV Slovenia. See the trailer:
