First Pile Dwellings Discovery on the Ljubljana Marsh

An Enormous Find

3. 12. 2015–4. 2. 2016

2015 marked the 140th anniversary of the discovery of the pile dwellings in the Ljubljana Marshes. To commemorate the anniversary, the City Museum of Ljubljana is currently hosting the exhibition An Enormous Find - First Pile Dwellings discovery on Ljubljana Marsh. Exclusively on display for this exhibition is also the oldest wooden wheel in the world. The wheel will be displayed at the museum's Treasury Room until 4 February 2016.

To mark the anniversary, the Ljubljana Marsh Nature Park prepared an  exhibition which presents the heritage of the pile dwellings in Ig,  discovered by the then head of the Provincial Museum of Carniola, Karl  Deschmann (Dragotin Dežman), in the immediate vicinity of Ig. The  exhibition presents Deschmann’s activity in the week before and after  the start of excavations. The discovery was followed by an extraordinary  reaction of the public throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire and  beyond. Today the pile dwellings in Ig are a monument of national  importance and have also received an inscription to the UNESCO World  Heritage List.

The exhibition An Enormous Find, currently on display in the basement of the museum from 3 December 2015 till 10 January 2016, is now exclusively joined, for the exhibition’s duration, by the oldest wooden wheel with an axle in the world. The wheel was found in the Ljubljana Marsh in 2002.

The Ig or Deschmann pile dwellings are some of the 111 prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps that were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011. The remains of these prehistoric settlements are the most important archaeological source for the research of early European agrarian societies. These finds offer a detailed insight into the life of prehistoric Europe from about 5000 BCE to 500 BCE. During the era of pile dwellings several discoveries occurred that are so timeless that they now feel self-evident. Ceramic is one of them, and among the most famous are the pots coming from the Deschmann pile dwellings.
