The third meeting of the Up Close study group will be themed Activism through photography. Cyrille Cartier's lecture Gender, violence and seeing: Viewer Inside the Image? will focus on what role does seeing play against the backdrop of ongoing violence in the world and specifically gender-based violence. She will discuss how we as media consumers perpetuate violence and inequality and how we can fight against it.

»Looking away is part of the complacency. How often do we look away even when we see? Maybe we don't see. We have the option to see but we don't. We choose not to. We do it so often that we don't realize we have a choice,« Cyrille Cartier reflected.

Cyrille will link the main themes of the lecture to the life and work of Letizia Battaglia, whose photographic opus is characterised by power, violence, resistance, rebellion and emotion. Among others, she will talk about Letizia's fights for recognition of her work and access to images compared to her male counterparts, her eternal fight for gender equality and her commitment to restoring dignity to the so-called victim.

Cyrille Cartier is a journalism mentor and journalist with a focus on gender-related issues who has lived and worked in several countries including Iraq, China and, now, Croatia. She is one of the founders of Živi Atelje DK, (Living Atelier DK) a non-governmental non-profit organization on engaged art in Croatia. She is project coordinator of the No Borders projects on community-building and collective integration bringing together people who want Croatia to be home with people for whom Croatia is home.

Entrance fee 3€.
