EarZoom Sonic Arts Festival and ICMC 2012 Exhibition

9. 8. 2012–30. 8. 2012

The Jakopič Gallery is the main exhibition venue of the International Computer Music Conference (ICMC) and the EarZoom sonic arts festival 2012. It is featuring a selection of works by different artists and includes spatial sound installations and interactive pieces, which deal with the perception of sound and space as well as with the perception of time during sonic reception.

The artists created virtual sonic environments which involve the spectator as an active contributor of the sonic material as well as a passive observer of predefined spatial and musical structures. The exhibition also includes six fixed media audio-visual works / acousmatic compositions including visualizations.

The 38th International Computer Music Conference (ICMC) is hosted in collaboration with the 4th annual EarZoom festival – between the 9th and 14th September 2012 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and is held within the framework of IRZU - Institute for Sonic Arts Research. The event is taking place at various venues: Kino Šiška, Španski borci, Stara mestna elektrarna, Dvorana dijaškega doma Tabor, Galerija Jakopič, Galerija ŠKUC, Galerija Kapelica, Kiberpipa and Menza pri koritu.

Since 1974 the ICMC has been the major international forum for the presentation of the full range of outcomes from technical and musical research, both musical and theoretical, related to the use of computers in music. This annual conference regularly travels the globe, with recent conferences in the Americas, Europe and Asia. The ICMC 2012 in Ljubljana is featuring works by over 350 artists, scientists, theorists, composers and performers which were selected by a 500-member international jury, within a double-blind reviewing process. Invited speakers and artists: Seth Kim-Cohen, Diedrich Diederichsen and Johannes Kreidler.

Like in previous years, the ICMC 2012 is featuring a wide range of papers and music, covering all aspects of technical, creative and aesthetic issues around the use of computers in music. The theme of the 2012 conference is Non-Cochlear Sound, which can be understood as an analogy to the Duchampian notion of non-retinal art. The phrase "Non-Cochlear Sound" was coined by artist and writer, Seth Kim-Cohen, in his 2009 book: In The Blink of an Ear: Toward a Non-Cochlear Sonic Art.
