Tree

1. 12. 2016–3. 4. 2017

The "Tree" project and exhibition are the result of a collaboration between the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana and five Slovenian academies and universities educating future photographers. It is a creative response to the conceptual triggers that have inspired Ljubljana through its European Green Capital title as well as the "Genesis" exhibition of photographs by the globally renowned Sebastião Salgado.

This educational and exhibition project has enabled young photographers to trace the processes of expert exhibition development during the academic year, while also making their original photographs as supervised by their tutors. Their works reflect and contextualise tree as a completely obvious phenomenon in the natural and urban environment, and also as a notion that has been one of the oldest and most telling symbols of humanity and life in general, and with good reason.

The chosen fourteen diverse series of photographs, marked by fresh original approaches of young artists, thus express a wide range of associations, conceptual considerations, artistic approaches, technical experimentations, documentary recordings, personal reflections and mood poetics.

Ever since man began depicting its surroundings, such images have featured the tree with its actual and symbolic role. All ancient peoples were seeking spiritual connections with the tree symbolising the branched out yet solid structure of the civilisation, beginning with its smallest cell, the family, and commonly serving as a metaphor for life as such. Ultimately, there are five hundred times more trees than people on our planet – the trees surviving centuries, even millennia. And just like every human being, each tree is a unique creation of nature telling its own unrepeatable story.
