Conny Blom: From Above

26. 1. 2010–26. 2. 2010

The exhibition From Above consists of three selected projects by the Swedish visual artist Conny Blom. In his work the artist deals with defining issues of our modern society, our living conditions and the rights of the individual versus the society and the economical forces.

Balancing between the poetic and the subversive, Blom uses material from pop culture as well as iconic pieces of contemporary art to comment, question and subvert established hierarchies.

Already with its title, 4:33 Minutes of Stolen Silence is an obvious reference to John Cage’s classic. The sound piece consists of 4:33 minutes of silence taken from recorded, copyrighted compositions of rock, jazz and classical music. The enhanced sound of silence uncovers that the silence is far from quiet – we can hear the sound of the audience, conductor’s batons and the unintended sounds of recording equipment... When the surrounding sounds have been edited out, it is possible to hear things hidden behind the background hiss. Is the apparent silence also a copyrighted work of an author?

The video piece Desensitizer is a collage of thousands of stills from violent movies, every still depicting a scene of a brutal killing. They undoubtedly form the most violent piece of film ever. 24 murders per second. Individually indistinguishable to the conscious mind because of their speed, together they form a numbing, flickering Odyssey through movie violence. The video challenges believers or non-believers in subliminal perception as well as for the believers and non-believers in the effects of video violence.

If a TV receiver is set to an unused frequency it will pick up the cosmic background radiation and display it as static flickering. In the photo series From Above a section of the sky is being portrayed at a specific time, using both a camera and the information obtained from a TV receiver. The digital void is absolute. The black is only black. In the analogue world there’s static, and where there is static there is the possibility of the "other". A space open for interpretations or perhaps even communication. The element of chance allowing a channel to the other side, the dead or even God. But in the digital world there is no static flickering. If there is no signal the screen is blank. The negation of information. When the window to the world of televised dreams has closed you’re left face to face with your own reflection. Your gaze is repelled, denied to penetrate the shiny surface and ultimately sent back straight at you. Desires are unsatisfied. The voyeur is confronted with himself.
