Veli & Amos: Space is a Canvas – Diptych

31. 3. 2017–2. 5. 2017

With their exhibition "Space is a Canvas – Diptych", the Slovenian-Swiss art duo Veli & Amos are trying to integrate their differing artistic practices and media into an image perceived in two dimensions, using a spatial installation to that effect.

In the past, they have been extensively seeking to push boundaries and frameworks within their artistic campaigns. They are noted for their specific artistic stance and visual surprises that are based on contemporary marketing strategies and their instant banalities. In this project, they are exploring the canvas as a very clearly defined element with regard to space. They are using various media, such as video, film, music, performance, stage installation, etc., to create fragments of the final image. Throughout the installation, the visitor is entering the image and becoming part of it, with the borders of the artwork depending on personal perception and the associations triggered. Visitors, the gallery staff, the genuine felled tree, the bar, mannequins, artistic objects – all these form various figurative situations that the artists seek to bring to life through music. They are thereby achieving the feel of the music video scenery as one of the levels of this multi-layered installation.

Diptych is the relation between their lifestyle and artistic production. With regard to uncertain situations in which they often find themselves, the artists have been posing a number of questions that demand prompt answers and efficient responses, which, however, often result in new instances of uncertainty and uneasiness, only to be used by the artists to boost public attention and promotion. Their thoughts: “Does their creativity focus on the artist and art as such? How to capture the moment and at the same time preserve the long-term agenda of their creativity? How to realise one’s higher mission, such as “saving the whales”, covertly through artistic activity?”

They are strategically composing artwork after artwork, project after project, as if composing puzzle pieces into the overall image, which audience and followers are tracing and observing. They are trying to fathom what the big idea is that Veli & Amos are declaring and that they believe would enlighten them. It is these relations that the exhibition Space is a Canvas – Diptych is exposing: the position of artists’ audience and supporters in the predicted higher plan around which they have been constructing their artistic scene, and how the audience perceives itself in this situation.
