Made in GT22
In the ninth exhibition of the series Ljubljana Bows to Slovenia, through which we seek to overcome the divide between the "central" and the "peripheral," this time we present artworks from the collection of Maribor's GT22.
This edition introduces Made in GT22, a new project developed by the artistic community and educational laboratory located at Glavni trg 22 in Maribor, from which the initiative takes its name.
Conceived as a love letter from the year 2026, the exhibition draws inspiration from Alfred Joseph Frueh's famous folded letter to his wife.¹ It proposes, through the language of fiction and speculation, a programmatic point of departure for decentralising dialogue within the Slovenian art system.
For the duration of the exhibition, GT22 is reimagined within a Ljubljana gallery as a new collective artwork assembled from pieces held in the GT22 archive by artists connected to Maribor. Both the content and the confessional form of the exhibition deliberately court envy and frustration, inviting viewers toward the embodied gesture of a bow—at once an act of deference and a gesture of homage.
¹ In January 1913, caricaturist and illustrator Alfred Joseph Frueh sent his wife, Giulietta Fanciulli, a two-dimensional love letter that unfolds into a three-dimensional art gallery. The letter was intended to prepare her for the galleries she would visit during her stay in Paris.
