Rob Hornstra’s photomonograph Ordinary People available at the Jakopič Gallery
To accompany the exhibition by the acclaimed Dutch photographer Rob Hornstra at the Fotomuseum Den Haag in the Netherlands, a retrospective photomonograph titled Ordinary People was published by Lannoo at the end of 2023. On the occasion of the project’s first international presentation in Ljubljana, the bilingual publication in English and Dutch is also available at the Jakopič Gallery.
"My work is not necessarily about the people I photograph, but about the social role they play. That role is often visualised through their clothing. Bakers, butchers, skaters, drug addicts, sex workers - all these groups dress a specific way and are active in a specific environment. I find that fascinating to see and want it to be preserved."
(Rob Hornstra in the photomonograph Ordinary People)
Rob Hornstra (Borne, 1975) focuses on long-term documentary and socially engaged projects as a portrait photographer, seeking iconic images that can serve as symbols of the moment or place in which the photograph was taken. In the last 20 years, he has created a human portrait of our time by photographing people in their everyday situations, with a focus on Russia and Europe.
The book Ordinary People is a hybrid book that balances between a substantial retrospective catalogue and a conceptual artist book. It provides a surprising insight into the twenty-year oeuvre of an impassioned photographer.
The photomonograph was published in conjunction with the exhibition at the Fotomuseum Den Haag in late 2023. It includes essays by Lynn Berger, Merel Bem, Joerg Colberg, and Willemijn van der Zwaan, the curator of the exhibition in Haag.
