Presentation of the first project from the Photography Empowers masterclass with Susan Meiselas
It is with great pleasure, a week ahead of the arrival of Susan Meiselas in Ljubljana, that we announce the presentation of the first project created as part of the Photography Empowers masterclass run at the Jakopič Gallery with the renowned American photographer and member of Magnum Photos along with two other experts in the field of photography, Lydia Matthews and Luciana Pinchiero. We invite you to join us on Thursday, 8 June 2023, at 18.00, at the Muslim Cultural Centre in Ljubljana for the event A Thousand and One Images of Islamic Architecture, where masterclass participant Katja Bidovec will also present her project."
Since late April, 15 photographers, selected through a public call for proposals, have been taking part in the free Photography Empowers masterclass at the Jakopič Gallery, collaborating with various communities on 13 projects. The masterclass will take place in person at the Jakopič Gallery on 17 and 18 June, under the guidance of renowned experts in the field of photography: Susan Meiselas, one of the most socially engaged and conscious contemporary photographers and a member of Magnum Photos, Lydia Matthews, an established American curator, author, researcher and lecturer, and Luciana Pinchiero, a socially engaged Argentine-American photographer and artist.
We are pleased to announce that one of the participants, photographer Katja Bidovec, will already be presenting her photography project, which is the result of her collaboration with the Islamic community in Slovenia, on Thursday, 8 June 2023 as part of the Thousand and One Images of Islamic Architecture event. Katja Bidovec will show her series of photographs created at the Muslim Cultural Centre Ljubljana in the evening as a projection accompanied by Ahmed Alili and the youth choir that operates within the Muslim Cultural Centre Ljubljana.
In her project application for the Photography Empowers call for proposals, Katja Bidovec wrote: "At the beginning of 2020, Slovenia will have its first Muslim centre with a mosque in the heart of Ljubljana. This building will be the focal point of my photo project. I chose it primarily because it serves as a gathering point for members of the Muslim community, where they come to pray daily and celebrate their most important holidays. Through my photographs, I want to show that the mosque is not an exclusive space only for Muslims, but a building open to all visitors."
Katja Bidovec's presentation will take place in the evening as part of the event A Thousand and One Images of Islamic Architecture which will also feature world-renowned photographer Arne Hodalič, cultural expert and representative of the Islamic Community Ela Porić and multi-award-winning architect Matija Bevk.
A warm welcome!
