Jakopič Gallery remains a key venue for large exhibitions of Slovenian and foreign photographers in 2018

The Jakopič Gallery programme for 2018 is dedicated to the presentation of important Slovenian and foreign photography. After the conclusion of the retrospective exhibition of Tihomir Pinter, a master of black-and-white analogue photography, we will be opening the exhibition "Photographer" on 20 March, a retrospective of the Trieste-based photojournalist Mario Magajna.

From 1945 to his retirement in 1982, Mario Magajna was employed as a photojournalist at the Primorski dnevnik newspaper until 1993. His camera captured an abundance of events in Trieste, Gorizia, and their surroundings. He eternalised 50 years of Trieste’s history. Magajna was one of the pioneers of professional Slovenian photojournalism, a master of his craft, a conscious Slovenian, and a man of cosmopolitan spirit and dialogue. On 29 May, we are announcing the opening of an overview exhibition of the world-renowned photographer Marc Riboud (1923–2016). As part of the Magnum Photos agency, he spent many years working as a photojournalist, while also building his own oeuvre of auteur photography, which developed mostly on his unbelievably numerous journeys around the world.

Photography will also be the theme of the international conference Photographic Histories in Central and Eastern Europe, which the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana is organising in collaboration with international partners. The conference will be held from 8 to 10 May at the City Museum of Ljubljana. The Jakopič Gallery, a space for alternative views on the frontiers of various art fields, it will also participate in the Sound Explicit project for the 7th year in a row. The cycle of experimental sound and audio performances is arriving at the gallery on 3 and 4 September.
