AVA 007: Degree Show

7. 7. 2015–23. 9. 2015

The Academy of Visual Arts in Ljubljana (AVA) is presenting itself with the exhibition of works of the already fifth generation of its graduating students. Graduating from their two degree programs, Conceptualization of Space and Fine Arts, these are the students who have successfully finished their studies in the 2014/15 academic year.

"With their freshness, innovativeness and critical approach, the works of this year's graduates presented at the show reflect the time we live in, for which they have my heartiest congratulations. The variety of the works presented proves that through its programmes and collective teaching AVA encourages and develops individuality, thus enabling the diversity of creative contents, practices and approaches," wrote Assistant Professor Pepi Peter Sekulich in the exhibition catalogue about this year's generation of graduates. And Alenka Gregorič, Art Gallery Director of City Art Gallery Ljubljana and Tobačna 001 Cultural Centre, MGLM, one of this year’s visiting lecturers, added: "I was very pleased to see that the young artists are very well aware of the time in which they live. Their sharpness of thought and analysis of the problems of today's society are at an enviably high level given their youth.  When presenting their knowledge and findings, they have no major difficulty articulating their thoughts. And precisely for this reason they can translate their views into their own artistic practice quite authoritatively."

The fifth generation of AVA graduates is presenting itself to the public with diverse works: Nejc Čulk has made a film with dystopian landscapes entitled Disappearance; Vanja Erjavec has created a spatial installation from blank painting canvases called Soul at Work; Nuša Filipović has shot an animated film based on her own screenplay entitled I Survive; Ari Gabrijelčič has constructed his installation Industrial Jungle using water pipes and tree bark, and Nika Vučko made a 3D painting from red plexiglass called Kiss.

AVA encourages interdisciplinary research and the use of new media and technologies within a theoretical framework. Study is based on a critical understanding of art within a broad cultural and social context. AVA students are given the tools and experience to work in a wide range of professional artistic environments.

AVA is an independent, non-profit college that constantly seeks to improve the quality of its courses through annual assessments that are conducted by external examiners. Students at AVA are tutored and supervised by artists and lecturers from various European universities. AVA holds a unique position in Slovenia in that its courses are based on the British higher education system. The students and the school have received several Slovenian and international awards for contemporary art, short films, and photography since 2008.
