AVA 006: Degree Show

11. 7. 2014–31. 8. 2014

Academy of Visual Arts in Ljubljana (AVA) is presenting the exhibition of works of the fourth generation of AVA's graduating students of their two degree programs, Conceptualization of Space and Fine Arts, who successfully finished their studies in the 2013/14 academic year.

"Despite the depressing environment in which we find ourselves, we at AVA continue to try to keep morale high and our students motivated. They are already carrying the burden of the precarious present on their shoulders. Yet the unpredictable future is also in their own hands, one way or another, because through their positive actions they can also positively impact the future. The works presented in this show express the interdisciplinary, originality and individuality of approaches reflecting the time we live in now in a humorous, critical and original way while at the same time anticipating the time that is coming, thus giving us hope for a better, brighter future," were the words of dean Pepi Sekulich in the catalogue, accompanying the exhibition.

The fourth generation of AVA graduates is presenting itself to the public with diverse works: Matjaž Bertoncelj is presenting his graphic novel based on the novel Humiliated and Insulted by Fjodor M. Dostojevski; Ari Gabrijelčič is presenting the installation High Art; Ana Jagodic has prepared two works, Silky Beast (wax strips on city light poster) and  Chewland (chewing gums on canvas); Zala Kobe has created a set design for the dance performance What Happens When You Touch It; Kristina Mehle is presenting herself with a mixed media installation titled Reflection of Transparency; Anže Rumiha has made the feature film Goodbye, My Love!; and Luka Savić is showing a sculpture titled Could You?.

AVA encourages interdisciplinary research and the use of new media and technologies within a theoretical framework. Study is based on a critical understanding of art within a broad cultural and social context. AVA students are given the tools and experience to work in a wide range of professional artistic environments.

AVA is an independent, non-profit school that constantly seeks to improve the quality of its courses through annual assessments that are conducted by external examiners. Students at AVA are tutored and supervised by artists and lecturers from various European universities. AVA holds a unique position in Slovenia in that its courses are based on the British higher education system. The students and the school have received several Slovenian and international awards for contemporary art, short films, and photography since 2008.
