At the Jakopič Gallery we are organizing a photography workshop with the well-known British landscape photographer Simon Norfolk. The workshop Taking a step up: Adding layers to your project, that will take place from 7 to 10 April 2022, is aimed at a group of 12 photographers with some experience, that are ready to shift up to a higher level. It will be a mixture of classroom, conversations and shooting.

In the workshop, Simon will enable you to discuss, share and learn about the development of your long-term photographic projects and help you to craft your stories. Together with him you will work on (re)conceptualizing and clarifying your project ideas; making them sharper and more effective.

Simon has seen a lot of work during his career, but rarely does he see work that is really special. At the workshop, he will explain how to give that extra sophistication to a project. How to sharpen it to the point that makes it stand out from the rest, to give it the lucidity that makes it wins awards or make it published in top-flight outlets.

He will also show you, how he crafts his projects and how he layers them up with ideas to make them multifaceted. Simon will share how he researches and clarifies an idea and the influences he brings to bear, not just on what he photographs, but why he makes his pictures look the way they do.

The mentor will also talk about places he finds inspirational, like a little 17th century landscape painting, Paleolithic cave painting or a handful of ideas from European philosophy.

As a participant it’s ideal if you have begun or have the sketch for a larger body of work or a more serious project, as Simon believes that he can help more to lift a project if it is at its beginning. »Sometimes the first steps are the hardest part,« he thinks.

The workshop will also include one late evening outside shooting followed by a very early morning. Simon sticks to that routine when he is on an assignment. After the shooting you’ll have the chance to review the work you made. For Simon it is also very important that the participants are aware of how much you can learn from the rest of the class.

The estimated timelines for the workshop are:

- Thursday and Friday, 7 and 8 April, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (with breaks)
- Saturday, 9 April: from 10.00 to 15.30 (with breaks) and from 19.00 to 22.00 (late evening outside shooting)
- Sunday, 10 April: from 4 to 6 p.m. (very early morning shooting) and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (with breaks)

The price of the 4-day workshop is 300 €.

Hurry up with your application, as there is only  room for 12 participants!

Simon Norfolk is a landscape photographer whose work has explored and expanded the meaning of the word 'battlefield'. Eschewing the term ‘photojournalist',Simon endeavours to show the hidden complexities of conflict regions in stark contrast to traditional conflict photography.

He has been described by one critic as: 'the leading documentary photographer of our time. Passionate, intelligent and political; there is no one working in photography that has his vision or his clarity.'
