TAKLE MAMO … / SO IT HAS COME TO THIS… #7

Dorotea Škrabo: Which Came First?

TAM-TAM’s Street Gallery

5. 2. 2019–25. 2. 2019

At the last, seventh exhibition of the "Takle mamo … / So it has come to this…" cycle Dorotea Škrabo is presenting the "Which Came First?" triptych. The artist is interested in the phenomenon of the image in the internet era, exploring the relations between new media, popular culture and art especially as it relates to the limits of social networks.

Which came first? The chicken, the egg (@world_record_egg) or Kylie Jenner (@kyliejenner)? The in question is the current world record holder for most liked Instagram post, beating the previous champion Kylie Jenner. The overthrow has not gone unnoticed, it was reported on by tabloids all over the world as well as by the likes of CNN, BBC and The Guardian. The situation is therefore a great reminder of the scale on which social networks operate, having the power to produce events. The latter vary from banal and ultimately insignificant to those that are able to influence our wider socio-political reality. But let’s return to the age old question of the chicken and the egg, adding Kylie Jenner, a media personality who managed to make complete use of different social networks. Confronting Dorotea Škrabo’s posters is to confront two realities and with one being no less real than the other we are therefore also confronted by the absurdity of placing an event, defined by the internet out into the street.

Dorotea Škrabo (1992) is interested in the phenomenon of the image in the internet era, exploring the relations between new media, popular culture and art especially as it relates to the limits of social networks. In her short online videos she is developing a critical attitude towards current trends. She participated in many exhibitions and has presented her work in student exhibitions, at Kino Šiška, Multimedia Centre KIBLA, MoTa Point, Fotopub festival, Metricubi Gallery, CTK Rijeka, Aksioma Project Space, Filodrammatica Gallery (Drugo More), UGM Studio and VN Gallery. She is currently concluding her MA studies at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana.
