Events: Plečnik House - 2017

In 2017, the Plečnik Year, we commemorate two anniversaries that marked the life of the architect Jože Plečnik: the 60th anniversary of his death (7 January 1957) and the 145th anniversary of his birth (23 January 1872). The Plečnik House is beginning the Plečnik Year on 7 January, with an open day for all visitors of the house.

We are inviting you to the public presentation of Symbolism of Jože Plečnik’s Architecture, a book by Andrej Hrausky. The presentation at the Plečnik House will be accompanied by a discussion regarding the inscription of Plečnik’s works on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Spend Wednesday 8 February at the Plečnik House and visit the permanent exhibition Plečnik, dedicated to the architect’s life and work. Do not miss the temporary exhibition Plečnik on Brioni, and the unique and authentically preserved Plečnik’s home. Reserve a spot on one of the guided tours of the house on prijava@mgml.si. The museum opens at 10.00 am and closes at 9.00 pm.

"We could create something incredible out of the castle and its surroundings, and I see no one but you that would be able to carry out this historical mission," were words written by the first Czechoslovakian president Masaryk in a 1923 letter to architect Plečnik. Discover how Plečnik envisioned the Prague home of the first and all successive presidents on the introductory lecture, given by Martin Halata, MA, and architect Michal Šula, authors of the Plečnik and Prague Castle exhibition.

For the International Museum Day, celebrated globally by museums on 18 May, the Plečnik House is opening its' doors with an all day free entry. Read further to find out what is in store for you on this day, and how to guarantee a spot for a visit to Plečnik's authentically preserved home.

Enjoy a stroll through the exhibition Plečnik and Prague Castle in the company of our curator Ana Porok, whose guided tour will shed light on Plečnik's design for the Prague Castle renovation, and on his connections with President Masaryk and his daughter Alice. 

Oh, the might of the night… pay a visit to the Plečnik for the Museum Summer Night 2017. The doors of the architect’s home will stay open from 10 a.m. and all the way till midnight.

Ten artists, nine art prints and one inspiration: architect Jože Plečnik. We are kindly inviting you to the first guided tour of the exhibition JOŽE with Lara Mejač, curator of the exhibition from the DobraVaga Gallery. The guided tour will take place on Wednesday 12 July, at 5.00 pm, at the Plečnik House.

Find out how ten Slovenian artists of the younger generation interpreted Jože Plečnik through their art prints on the last guided tour of the exhibition JOŽE. Your guide will be Lara Mejač, curator of the exhibition from the DobraVaga Gallery, and the tour is scheduled for Wednesday 30 August, at 5.00 pm, at the Plečnik House.

Plečnik House will host a lecture by a well-known American historian, professor Bruce R. Berglund, who just published a book Castle and Cathedral in Modern Prague: Longing for the Sacred in a Skeptical Age. The book looks at the religious ideals that motivated the president, his daughter, and the architect, and it views their collaboration at the Castle in Prague. Join us on Tuesday, 3 October, at 6 p.m.!

“What truly separates Jože Plečnik from his peers, then and now, is his ability to create a unique relationship and connections between humans and their surroundings.” Plečnik, the City and Me is a public editorial conference, where renowned local and foreign experts will compare their views regarding Plečnik’s ideas. Join us on a short walking tour of Plečnik’s Ljubljana and at the round table in the Plečnik House, on Friday 20 October from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

You are invited to join the first guided tour of the exhibition Plečnik and water: fountains in the city with the author of the exhibition, Ana Porok. The tour begins this Wednesday 25 October at 5 p.m., at the Plečnik House.

How Plečnik revived and arranged fountains around Ljubljana will be unveiled at a guided tour with our curator Ana Porok in Ljubljana’s city centre. Join us on Saturday 18 November, at 11 a.m. The tour starts in front of the Plečnik House.

Spend 3 December, the birthday anniversary of our great poet France Prešeren, in the company of our great architect Jože Plečnik. For the traditional This Happy Day of Culture, the doors of Plečnik House will remain open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. 

With Plečnik Year 2017 coming to its end, we are inviting you to the presentation of the Plečnik's Architecture in Ljubljana, the newest book on Plečnik, at the Plečnik House. The book was written by the architect and Plečnik connoisseur Andrej Hrausky.
